Are Keysafes Actually Safe?

It has surely crossed all of our minds; are keysafe boxes actually safe? After all, the concept of leaving a key outside of your house within just a few metres of the door it opens.

There is no straightforward yes or no answer to this question, and a lot of it comes down to how you use it. In addition, many people are in situations where they just require a key to be accessible on the property, regardless of whatever risk that might bring.

In this blog, we will examine exactly how safe these outdoor lockboxes are, and offer some advice on how you can use them responsibly.

How To Use a Keysafe Properly

If you are going to use a keysafe, here are our top tips for making sure your home is actually secure:

  • Keep it out of sight
  • Buy quality
  • Change the code frequently

Don’t Leave Your Keysafe in the Open

This might be obvious to many of you, but it is not a good idea to leave your keysafe out in the open. It has to be accessible but should be discrete. At a minimum, you should consider the following:

  • Your lockbox should not be visible from the street, so as to avoid the keen eyes of any potential burglars.
  • The safe should be somewhere which it cannot be tampered with while out of sight.
  • It should not be at eye level, again to make it more difficult to stop.
  • While inconvenient, your lockbox should not be close to the door it opens. Or any entryway, for that matter.

Instead, place the safe somewhere obscured and unconventional. You could perhaps attach it to a low brick hidden by a drainpipe or plant pot. Or even behind some vegetation like a bush or amongst a climbing plant, just not next to the front door lock!

Don’t Be a Cheapskate!

There are certain things where it is appropriate to save money, and there are other places where there is little scope for skimping. Home security is one of these areas; saving a few quid once is not worth the risk of a home invasion and burglary.

Instead, make sure the keysafe you buy is of good quality with verified reviews. Don’t accept a knockoff from some untrustworthy Amazon seller just because they are charging a fiver. Spending the extra tenner to get something of real quality is an investment in the safety of you, your family, and all of your belongings.

Keep the Code Fresh

You don’t have to change the code each and every time you use the safe, but it is a good idea to update it every now and again.

Keep the Code Fresh

The reasons for this are broad, but it mostly comes down to the code getting into the wrong hands. Picture this scenario:

  • You offer the code of the box to a friend over WhatsApp, as well as your address.
  • Your friend has their phone stolen, and the thief has a note of these details.
  • The burglar arrives at your home, finds the safe, and opens it before entering your home.

By keeping your codes updated, you are keeping yourself covered for situations like this. Again, you don’t have to do it all the time, but at least once a month is advisable.

Are Keysafes ‘Safe’?

There is no easy answer to this, as a lot of it depends on how they are being installed around a home.

For example, if you follow our above tips, then your keysafe will be much more effective than if you were to present it proudly next to your front door.

Having said that, naturally having a key outside presents an inherent risk, regardless of how cleverly you place your key. It will be unlikely that a burglar will have an easier time finding an incredibly discrete and cleverly placed lockbox over just entering through ‘traditional’ burglar means, but nonetheless, it is one more possible mode of entry.

It is also worth noting that if a burglar has the means to open up a keysafe, then they are likely capable of opening up the front door too.

Even if the burglar chooses to bash the lockbox off the wall and go at it with a hammer and chisel, this will take time and make a lot of noise. The criminals are much more likely just to shoulder a door in or smash a window.
